Time and Media:On the Differences between Literary Narrative and Pictorial Narrative

Long Diyong;
Media for expression are very important in narrative activities.Without the use of media,no narrative activities can be carried out normally.Even the same story will take on different looks,as long as it is narrated through different media.The relationship between narrative and time has always been one of the most important parts of narrarology,but time is not a privilege of literary narrative. "Spatial art" such as painting,photography and sculpture also recreates or artistically processes the narrative element of time in works.This paper mainly studied the "sequence" of narrative time and its representations through media,and analyzed differences between literary narrative and pictorial narrative on this basis.Different from literary narrative that must strictly follow the rules of time,pictorial narrative can break some rules of time in special circumstances to adapt to some spatial scenes.
